Welcome to Marion County.
As
the County Judge/Executive in Marion County, I welcome you. While I may be a
little prejudice as a native Marion Countian, I know there is no better place to
live and raise a family than here. I’ve felt this way all my life – but the
newcomers to our county confirm this – they just wonder why it took them so long
to get here!
The
“Heart of Kentucky” ---this beautiful county lies in the geographical center of
the state. Just an hours drive form both Louisville and Lexington, and a days
drive to approximately half of the county’s major population centers. Marion County is located in the “Outer Bluegrass Region”, most of the county is
comprised of picturesque farms. The southern, eastern and western perimeter is
defined by the beautiful “knobs”. Winding serendipity from the eastern tip near
Bradfordsville, the Rolling Fork River meanders through the county and exits
gracefully from the western end near Raywick, Kentucky.
The
most amazing aspect of Marion County is the people. Strong small towns, and
rural communities are scattered throughout the county, making the quality of
life perfect for family and residents. Lebanon – the county seat, is an old
historic town of 6,000 –the largest town in the county of approximately 19,000.
For
more than a decade, Marion County has gained a reputation as the working
community. Adding over 3,000 new jobs and renewed prosperity to the area, it
continues to grow with technology, education and global competitiveness.
We
are very proud to be one of the TOP 25 school systems in Kentucky. Offering
Vocational Training at our Area Technology Center is a complement to our
industrial community and provides excellent training pathways into secure jobs.
Our
housing and residential opportunities are readily available and we have very
modest tax rates as well as utility costs.
So,
whether you are just visiting our area, contemplating a move or just checking us
out, I encourage you to “Try on Marion County” – I think it will fit you fine.
Sincerely,
John G. Mattingly
County Judge Executive

The County Judge-Executive and five magistrates are elected to
four-year terms and make up the fiscal court. Their jurisdiction is
over all county roads, the jail, courthouse, and the animal shelter.
Motor Vehicle Licenses
All two and four wheeled motor vehicles other than farm vehicles must have Kentucky motor vehicle licenses, which are issued by the County Clerk's office. All questions with respect to licensing of vehicles should be directed to the County Clerk office (270-692-2651).
Driver's Licenses
Non-residents over 16 who are licensed in their home state and have a valid operator's license certificate in their immediate possession may operate a motor vehicle on Kentucky highways for 30 days in any calendar year. New residents to Kentucky must immediately obtain a Kentucky drivers license. There is no period of grace. Driver's licenses are required to operate motorcycles, motorbikes, and similar vehicles (other than mopeds) on public highways. Questions regarding operator's licenses should be referred to the Circuit Clerk's office (270-692-2681) in the Court
House.
City and
County Ordinances
Every city and county operates under a set of rules and regulations called
ordinances. For the most part, residents do not become involved with most of
these ordinances, the bulk of which apply only to City residents. Questions
regarding county ordinances should be referred to the County Clerk's Office
(270-692-2651) and questions regarding City ordinances should be referred to the
City Clerk's Office (270-692-6272).
