Marion County's oldest newspaper, The Lebanon Enterprise is in its 115th year of publication. The newspaper which is published every Wednesday goes out to 6200 households in Marion and surounding counties and across the country. State & Local Income Taxes Kentucky residents must pay tax on their entire income. Kentucky Income Tax Law is for the most part based on the Federal Income Tax Law. There are a few differences between the Federal and Kentucky Income Tax Laws, and a listing of those differences are noted in the Kentucky package Form 740 instructions. Returns are due April 15 each year for the preceding year's income, or the fifteenth day of the fourth month after the close of a fiscal year. County Tax Effective October 1, 1995, there was passed a 1% county tax imposed on all people employed in the county. The personal representative of the decedent's estate is responsible for computing the inheritance tax and filing an Inheritance and Estate Tax Return with the Kentucky Department of Revenue within 18 months after the death of the resident decedent. Lebanon, the county seat of Marion County, is located three miles southeast of the geographical center of the state of Kentucky. Lebanon, with a 2004 population of 5,884, is located 62 miles southwest of Lexington, Kentucky; 66 miles southeast of Louisville, Kentucky; 138 miles southwest of Cincinnati, Ohio; 151 miles northeast of Nashville, Tennessee; and 179 miles northwest of Knoxville, Tennessee. Marion County, located in both the Outer Blue Grass and the Mississippian Plateaus Regions, has a land area of 346 square miles. The city of Lebanon has a population of 5,884 and Marion County has a population of 18,728 as of 2004.
HIGHWAYS - Lebanon and Marion County are served by U.S. Highway 68 and Kentucky 55, both "AAA"-rated (80,000-pound gross load limit) trucking highways. The Blue Grass Parkway, which provides easy access to the Interstates 64, 65, and 75, is located 23 miles north via Kentucky 55 and 555. Interstate 65 is located 44 miles northwest of Lebanon, while Interstates 64 and 75 are located 65 miles northeast of Lebanon. The Cumberland Parkway is accessible 40 miles south via Kentucky 55. Portions of U.S. Highway 68, from Lebanon to Danville, were straightened to provide a safer access between the cities. U.S. 68 in Marion County is designated as a Scenic Highway and Byway. U.S. 68 follows a historic trail used by such notables as Andrew Jackson, Jane Todd Crawford and General Lafayette. RAILROADS - R.J. Corman Railroad provides the nearest branch line rail service at Bardstown, Kentucky, 25 miles northwest of Lebanon. The nearest intermodal facilities are located in Louisville, Kentucky, 66 miles northwest. AIRPORTS - Three easy-access airports are available in the area. The Lebanon-Springfield Airport - located four miles north of Lebanon, maintains a paved 5,000-foot runway. MOTOR FREIGHT - Lebanon has 15 truck lines that provide interstate and/or intrastate trucking service to Marion County.
ELECTRIC - Electric power is provided to Lebanon/Marion County by Kentucky Utilities and East Kentucky Power Cooperative, Inc. Both companies have coal fired generating facilities creating some of the lowest rates in the nation.
WATER - Water is furnished by the Lebanon Water Works Company. Average daily consumption is approximately 2.2 million, with a storage capacity of 2.3 million gallons. Recent construction of a 1 billion gallon reservoir assures industrial users of an abundant supply.
The Lebanon Water Works Company completed construction on a new 940-million-gallon reservoir on the Fagan Branch and a raw water pump station near the Rolling Fork at the Calvary Dam. These improvements will assure customer adequate water supply for future needs.
